Winning a chess game

Wolverhampton Chess Club

There are two ways to win a chess game.

You win if you:

  • Checkmate your opponent's King OR
  • Your opponent resigns.

You might think your opponent resigning is strange way to win. But, even if your opponent has not been checkmated, his position may be so bad that he knows he has no chance of winning or drawing the game. If this is the case then this player may end the game by telling his opponent that he is giving up the struggle. He does this so that a game may not continue pointlessly - wasting the time of both combattants.

In chess there is a special way of doing this. The player resigns, usually laying his King down on its side and saying to his opponent ''I Resign''.

A win gains the winner 1 point.
