Defence Strategy 1:

Moving Away - Retreating

Wolverhampton Chess Club

Here we have a White Bishop together with an enemy Black Queen on the board as shown.

Black to move

The black Queen moves. The Queen now ATTACKS the White Bishop. But it is now White to move. The White Bishop must move to a square NOT ATTACKED by the enemy Queen.

The White Bishop moves to safety. This square will do the Bishop is now safe for the moment.

Here is another example . On the Board are a White Bishop and a Black Knight.

It is White to move

The White Bishop moves. Look he is now attacking the Black Knight

Now it is Black's turn to move. The Black Knight moves to a square not attacked by the White Bishop. It also moves to safety. The Knight is now on a White square, and the Bishop cannot touch him. We can see this Bishop moves only on Black squares.
