The links below are to pdfs for certificates that can be photocopied and awarded to chess club members to mark their stages of achievement.
Each certificate requires a date and the teacher's signature to be 'valid'. They can be used by teachers to reward chess club members for taking the first few steps in learning to play chess - perhaps handing them out in an assembly, so that the school can applaud their achievement (and so the Chess Club gets a 'plug').
I suggest that the certificate for 'descriptive' notation is only aimed for by the most able. For most plays mastering algebraic notation is enough - especially at an early stage. That topic has been included for 'completeness'.
Certificate 1: Identifying pieces and their symbols
Certificate 2: Setting up the board
Certificate 3: Moving the pieces
Certificate 4: Castling
Certificate 5: En Passant
Certificate 6: Recording in Algebraic Notation
Certificate 7: Recording in Descriptive Notation
Certificate 8: Winning the first game
